MPA in Government & Policy

In many respects, Government & Policy can be defined the analysis of public sector issues, and the means and effort toward finding solutions to such situations. A subset of public administration in its own right – in both its practical application as well as such academic programs – the concentration of Government and Policy can be asserted as the study of how governmental decisions are made. The analysis of the immediate and long-term impact on society of those decisions is also key to this area of study and practice.

For many MPA in Government & Policy programs, it’s not necessarily a prerequisite to have prior experience with government or social studies coursework – although it is helpful. Candidates are also not expected, in many cases, to already be working in the public sector or in an industry that directly deals with government. A bachelor’s degree of some form, coupled with a desire to work in government or a related industry (such as the nonprofit sector) are often the most basic of requirements for prospective students. Similarly to a general MPA degree, a Government & Policy track often includes coursework related to the creation and implementation of public policy, intergovernmental relations, urban planning, and budgetary and finance-related studies.
