Master’s in Public Policy
Public Policy as a discipline and career path has grown to include the analysis of government decision making, giving those working within the field a greater understanding of why governments enact policy in the manner they do, and the effect that policy will have on society.
Typical Master of Public Policy programs have evolved over time to include an interdisciplinary approach to its teachings. Programming often includes coursework in urban and regional planning, political structures, sociology, finance and economics, as well as data analysis. The typical MPP is not that unlike its graduate level counterpart – the Master of Public Administration degree. The two have evolved in recent years to become so similar in scope that many schools have begun to combine programs. It has been realized that the analysis of public policy is as valuable a resource to those studying public administration as the study of public administration is to those enrolled in a public policy program. Of the differences that do still exist between the programs, MPA coursework often follows the study of program development and implementation, while an MPP track focuses on the skills associated with policy analysis. Because of the similarities, however, some Universities have begun to offer combined degrees – a Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA).
